Coming June 17th, 2014 - An Online Memory Cafe

From the Cafe LeBrain website:

June Theme: Words Have Power

June 17th from 1 PM to 2:30 PM EDT

Language shapes our perception of our world. The same can be said about language as it relates to dementia. Terms like dementia "sufferers" or "victims," or saying that someone with the disease is "demented," propagate fear and misconception and perpetuate the stigma that exists against people with dementia. This doom-laden language also undermines the outstanding work in advocacy and awareness being done worldwide by people with dementia. During this webinar, our panel -- Kate Swaffer (person with dementia, Australia), Richard Taylor, PhD (person with dementia, USA, and Romina Oliverio (dementia consultant, Canada) -- will discuss the current use of language and how it perpetuates the stigma of dementia, and suggest an alternative vocabulary.

Event Details

On the third Tuesday of every month, we meet for Café Le Brain - an online Memory Cafe that uses video conferencing technology to bring people together from far away. Together we enjoy free-flowing conversation, new ideas, support, and some fun.

This month's Café Le Brain will be hosted by Jan Pitts, co-chair and co-founder of Dementia Alliance International, and Richard Taylor, also a co-founder of Dementia Alliance International.

People living with and without the symptoms of dementia are welcome to attend. If you host a dementia support group, you can show this cafe live on your computer so that your group can participate. If you are caring for someone at home, you can both join in!

Café Le Brain is held in association with Dementia Alliance International, advocacy and support of, by, and for people with dementia.
